Here, you’ll find the only barrier coral reef in the continental United States, extensive mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, and more than 6,000 marine species, from tropical reef fish to bottlenose dolphins. This national marine sanctuary also protects historic shipwrecks that tell stories of our nation’s maritime heritage.
Visitors to Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary are encouraged to take advantage of the many recreational activities this amazing region has to offer while adhering to regulations that ensure this special place will be preserved for future generations. You can help protect the natural and cultural resources of the Florida Keys by choosing charter operators that participate in the sanctuary’s Blue Star programs. These programs support and encourage sustainable recreational diving and fishing practices. On the water, Team OCEAN volunteers are also available to help you reduce your impact on the coral reef ecosystem.
