The Christmas tree worm (Spirobranchus giganteus) can often be found on coral heads throughout the Florida Keys. Their radioles, the hair-like appendages radiating from the central spine, are used to catch phytoplankton floating in the water column. These shy organisms will retract into their calcareous tubes, usually hidden on the coral surface, when approached too closely by divers. (photo: Florida Keys NMS)
