Climate Change Assessment and Adaptation

The National Marine Sanctuary System is taking important steps to understand the resources and habitats most likely to be affected by climate change. With this information, we can adapt management plans to reflect new challenges and prioritize actions to protect vulnerable resources.

The impacts of climate change are intensifying both globally and locally, threatening America’s physical, social, economic, and environmental well-being. National marine sanctuaries and monuments are facing rising water temperatures and sea levels, water that is more acidic and contains less oxygen, shifting species, and altered weather patterns and storms.

Climate Change Impacts Report

This report was the first to systematically assess the impacts of climate change on Sanctuary resources, and was the outcome of a year and a half of intensive collaboration among local experts representing 16 agencies, organizations, and academic institutions to assess and downscale global climate change information into a regional climate change survey.

Wildlife & Wildlands Toolkit

The kit is designed for classroom teachers and informal educators in parks, refuges, forest lands, nature centers, zoos, aquariums, science centers, etc., and is aimed at the middle school grade level. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in partnership with six other federal agencies—National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA, NASA, U.S. Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management—developed the kit to aid educators in teaching how climate change is affecting the Nation’s wildlife and public lands, and how everyone can become climate stewards.
