Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary Designation Ceremony

Join us as we celebrate the official designation of Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary on Friday, September 6 at 11:00 am in Oswego, New York. The sanctuary is designated to recognize the national significance of the area's historical, archaeological, and cultural resources and to manage this special place as part of the National Marine Sanctuary System.

Welcome to the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary Designation Ceremony! Join NOAA, New York State, and local partners on Friday, September 6, 2024 at 11:00 am at the William S. Cahill Pier, 39 Lake Street, Oswego, NY as we celebrate the official designation of Lake Ontario as a national marine sanctuary. This event will be a great opportunity to learn about Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary and to recognize the many partners who contributed to the designation. Come be a part of this historic moment and show your support for the newest national marine sanctuary in the Great Lakes!

Speakers include NOAA Administrator Dr. Richard Spinrad, Governor Kathy Hochul (invited) and other state officials, and local officials who have been involved in the sanctuary designation process.

Note: Please allow time to park and walk to the Cahill Pier.

Community Events
12:00-3:00 pm

Join us at our community celebration in the marina parking lot (adjacent to the Cahill Pier)! Connect with local partners and dive into exciting activities for all to enjoy. There will be food for purchase from local food trucks and music. It’s a day of fun, connection, and showing your appreciation for Lake Ontario.

Accessibility
The Wiliam S. Cahill pier is accessible and has a fully paved surface. There will be a limited number of chairs and benches available. Please feel free to bring your own lawn chairs.
