Few places on the planet can compete with the diversity of the National Marine Sanctuary System, which protects America’s most iconic natural and cultural marine resources. The system works with diverse partners and stakeholders to promote responsible, sustainable ocean uses that ensure the health of our most valued ocean places. Resources are open to the public, and showcase opportunities such as education and research to anyone who has an interest in helping our ocean.

Celebrate the designation of Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary

On November 9th, NOAA, the state of Maryland, and Charles County will host a public celebration to commemorate the designation of Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary, the first national marine sanctuary designated since 2000. All ages welcome.

Now accepting applications for the Proposed Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council

NOAA is now seeking applications for seats on the advisory council for a proposed national marine sanctuary in the New York waters of Lake Ontario. Apply to represent your community interest on a council that will provide guidance and advice to NOAA through the sanctuary designation process.

Students take action against single use plastic

Students of two NOAA Ocean Guardian schools in Santa Barbara, Calif. have tackled the issue of marine plastic debris in their community. By leading campaigns targeting single-use plastics in schools and local businesses, the students have seen a tangible reduction in plastic waste on their city’s beaches.
