Sherman's Lagoon Celebrating National Marine Sanctuary System's 50th Anniversary
The characters in the Sherman's Lagoon comic strip are hitting the road to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the National Marine Sanctuary System.
According to Jim Toomey, creator of the daily comic strip, Sherman the shark, Fillmore the sea turtle, Hawthorne the crab and Ernest the fish, will visit several sanctuaries throughout the month of October. Their road trip started in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in the northwest Hawaiian Islands, followed by Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary in Georgia, Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary in Maryland, Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary in Washington, and finally National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa by the end of October.
The National Marine Sanctuary System encompasses more than 620,000 square miles of ocean and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. The network includes a system of 15 national marine sanctuaries and Papahānaumokuākea and Rose Atoll marine national monuments.
