Do you remember 1972? Nixon was president, the Watergate scandal was about to hit, and it costs 8 cents to mail a letter. Carole King was telling us It’s Too Late, and The Godfather and Deliverance were entertaining us at the box office. HBO would soon start broadcasting and Atari had just sent Pong to invade arcades. 210 million Americans were about to see an ocean revolution…
The Clean Water Act, the Ocean Dumping Act, the Coastal Zone Management Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and, of course, the National Marine Sanctuaries Act all came into being in 1972. Together these acts provided the foundation for ocean protection we enjoy today. Times have certainly changed in 40 years, but as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the National Marine Sanctuary System, what has not changed is the very relevant ocean conservation that is vital for our economy and ecology, culture and community right now. Your national marine sanctuaries are hard at work, every day, on the water and in the community, protecting and studying, educating and sharing, just as we have been for forty years and will be, for generations to come. But every once and a while, we step back for a moment and enjoy a good birthday party. Please join us in celebrating 40 years of National Marine Sanctuaries and helping lay the path for 40 more!
