The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary was established in 1990 and encompasses over 2,800 square nautical miles. The Florida Keys reef tract is believed to be the third longest barrier reef system in the world.

Close up view of the bathymetric survey showing the injured areas of the reef spurs which are highlighted in red. Areas A, B, E, and F were deeply gouged and the adjacent reef framework was destabilized. These areas are the subject of the restoration effort.
