How many years have you been fishing?
I have been fishing in Flower Garden Banks for 20 years now. In total, I’ve got 30 years of experience under my belt!
Why do you like to fish?
I love fishing; it has become an obsession of mine. Beyond that, it is also my lifelong profession. I work as a guide here in Texas, and I couldn’t ask for a better career!
What is the one thing you would like everyone to know about fishing in Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary?
I would like everyone to know that there is a vibrant, yet delicate coral ecosystem in Flower Garden Banks. If you are devoted to sustainable fishing in Flower Garden Banks like me, try to avoid bottom fishing to preserve these precious corals.
What changes, if any, have you noticed in your fishery?
Like many other places, the quality of our fishery has declined over my time here. I - like many others - love this fishery and worry we are literally loving this fishery to death. Through good management and new technologies, we are on track to rebuild our nation's fishery.
