Large spongy ledge

Though the sponges clinging to this rock cannot move and should be tasty morsels for fish predators, any fish taking a bite will be greeted with a mouthful of nasty, distasteful chemicals that quickly deter future feeding attempts. This feature of many sponge species allows them to grow and prosper on exposed rock where they are surrounded by an ocean of potential predators.
