Acoustic receiver
Numerous recreationally- and commercially-important fish species are found in Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary. Understanding their movement patterns is important to help protect them. With that in mind, scientists have surgically implanted transmitters in some black sea bass, red snapper, and gag and scamp grouper. These transmitters can be detected by instruments deployed around the sanctuary. This image shows an acoustic receiver suspended in the water column, listening for passing tagged fish.
