Carmen Cordero, a home-schooled student from Carpinteria, is one of 30 students participating in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's 2013 Ocean for Life program. "We'll be studying the ocean ecosystem," said Carmen, who celebrates her 16th birthday Thursday. "I'm very excited." Ocean for Life is a semiannual two-week program for American and Middle Eastern high school students hosted by the Channel Islands Marine National Sanctuary.

The Ocean for Life team was recognized for its work organizing and hosting a two-week marine science and cultural exchange program at Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary that draws inspiration from the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The program brings together students of diverse backgrounds from North America and the Middle East to explore marine science and conservation, while fostering new cross-cultural relationships.
