What does a typical day look like for you?

Like many other jobs, I have to tackle daily administrative tasks like emails, to-do lists, and conference calls. My job is in communications, so these tasks are essential. But day-to-day, my work varies widely! Some days I'm coordinating community engagement outreach events, working with partners to promote awareness of our ocean resources, and implementing communication rollouts. Other days I'm doing graphic design, taking photos and putting together videos for social media, planning interpretive exhibits, and working with the education or science teams to support their projects. There's always something exciting to do!

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?

Probably whenever I get the opportunity to join in on fieldwork and have the beautiful outdoors as my office for the day; it inspires me constantly! Plus, seeing the positive impact that our work at sanctuaries has in my local community.

What if any challenges have you faced as a woman in an ocean-related career?

It can certainly be challenging at times, as a young AAPI woman, to make my voice heard or to be able to express my creativity. But overall, I'm extremely lucky to be surrounded by smart, passionate, and inspiring women at my office at National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone who might be thinking of pursuing your career path?

The scope of my work is very broad, so my advice is this: always be open to learning. And if you can figure out what makes you happy, and figure out what you're good at, then you'll find your niche!
