National Marine Sanctuary
Anglers play a crucial role in protecting, conserving, and advocating for the success of national marine sanctuaries. As custodians of these waters, anglers are not only knowledgeable about the complex workings of these waters, they - like many others - depend on sanctuaries to experience the excitement of the catch, the power of salty air, and maybe even for their livelihood.
We are grateful to have anglers participate on our advisory councils to provide recommendations to sanctuary managers and policy-makers on critical issues like maritime business, education, conservation, and of course, responsible fishing.
With ongoing threats to marine and coastal ecosystems, sanctuary community members have found creative ways to educate the public and our nation's youth about marine conservation topics.
Workshops and partnerships with local organizations go beyond teaching kids sustainable recreational fishing techniques - they offer opportunities for young people to gain knowledge about the ocean and instill within them a lifelong ocean stewardship ethic.
